SPL (Sound Performance Lab)
SPL makes very high quality amps, preamps, DAC's and headphone amps in Germany. They are a unique pro audio company as their products both measure well and are designed by audiophiles. Unlike more pro products they are musical and not analytical. We were shocked at the price performance that they offered.

The Performer s900 stereo power amplifier is a compact size powerhouse. It excels in exceptional headroom thanks to the SPL VOLTAiR technology and impresses with a detail-rich, vivid, honest and musically outstanding sound.

Elector 1.1 stereo preamplifier
$2,999.00
Sale $2,699.00

2024 Preamplifier of the year in Part Time Audiophile

The SPL Elector 1.1 is a full analog preamplifier for the lover of pure analog technology. With motorized volume control, retro-look-VU-meter, tape monitor and the superior VOLTAiR technology the Elector brings analog sources to new life. The 1.1 version add home theater bypass and RCA preouts in addition to the XLR outs of the original. It is our favorite basic solid state preamp in the under $4000.00 price range. The fully balanced Elector has 3 RCA and 3 XLR balanced inputs. It has a full tape loop with XLR & RCA preamp outputs as well as a set of fixed RCA outs to add a headphone amp. It uses their patented Voltair high current system that supplies 4 times the DC rail voltage (120v) of most other systems that use 30 volts. The patented Voltair technology delivers greater headroom, better dynamic range and lower noise. Reviews have been superb.

In the Stereo times review Terry London summed with:

"One of my favorite solid-state amplifiers is the Pass Labs XA-25 because of the density of tonal colors, its effortless presentation, and its ability to create “meat on the bones” imaging. I kept thinking about what the SPL s800 reminded me the most of in my collection of amplifiers. Then it dawned on me; it was the wonderful Pass Labs XA-25. However, now add on a lower noise floor, unlimited power to drive virtually any speaker, and more extended/deeper/tauter bass frequencies."

"I hope it is apparent with what I shared and described in the review that I was mightily impressed with SPL’s Elector preamplifier and both the s800 and m1000 amplifiers. The physical appearance of all the pieces is quite attractive; the build quality and engineering live up to what you expect from a high-level German company. Now, add on the list of sonic superlatives such as a grainless silky-smooth overall presentation, quick, powerful macro-dynamics and speed, seamless integration of all frequencies from top to bottom, and rendering of tube-like timbres and image density. I believe the combo of the Elector preamplifier and s800 stereo amplifier is one of the great bargains in high-end audio. At their total retail price of $5,898, which is not inexpensive, these two pieces get you to a level of performance that competes with far more expensive pieces of equipment."

Diamond DAC-Preamp

$2777.00
Sale $2499.00

The Diamond DAC is a reference quality preamp DAC that supports PCM and DSD. It Features an elite DAC chip with DLP120 dual low pass filters, connectivity for up to six digital sources, and an external word clock. VOLTAiR technology, with its high operating DC voltage of 120 volts, allows the SPL Diamond to process and convert your audio with exceptional quality from various sources. It also has a DIP switch for bypassing its XLR and RCA outputs’ volume control (e.g., if you already have a headphone amp with its own volume control).

StereoNet summed with:

"this product is a serious challenger to considerably more expensive DACs – and food for thought for the latest product releases from PS Audio and other contemporary market rivals. The benefits of decades of pro-audio engineering prowess are clearly displayed here, so people searching for their endgame DAC would do well to audition it. This isn't for everyone – fans of built-in streamers and other such luxuries should look elsewhere – but it perfectly hits the spot for purist audiophiles."

Verdict
"It might be the most basic digital device in SPL's 'Professional Fidelity' range of consumer products, but the Diamond DAC is both superb-sounding and something of a high-end bargain. By focusing on essential flexibility only – no fiddly filters! – the company has come up with a design that's both easy to use and capable of excellent performance across a wide sweep of musical genres."

From the first review:

“With the Diamond, SPL presents a DAC with integrated preamplifier for the playback of exclusively digital sources. It converts PCM audio with a resolution of 32 bits and a sampling rate of up to 768 kilohertz. Direct Stream Digital is supported up to a resolution of DSD256 or 11.2 megahertz.”

“Like all devices of the Professional Fidelity series, it is available with a silver, black or red front panel. Personally, I really love the design. The rounded edges of the housing harmonize perfectly with the controls on the front and their clear labeling.”

“Diamond offers each a stereo USB and AES input as well as each two optical and coaxial stereo inputs. Via USB, both PCM audio and DSD audio can be converted. PCM audio is received in S/PDIF format, both coaxial (RCA), optical (Toslink F06) and balanced (AES/EBU). The source selection is done via the selection control on the front. The selected input is also shown in the dot matrix LED display: USB, COA1, COA2, OPT1, OPT2 or AES. Furthermore it is possible to connect an external word clock.”

“The volume is adjusted with a solid, milled aluminum, rotary knob. The high quality Alps RK27 “Big Blue” potentiometer gives a pleasant rotary feel. The analog volume control provides high-resolution dynamics even at low volumes.”

VOLTAiR technology:

“As with all components of the Professional Fidelity series, SPL’s VOLTAiR technology is also used for this product. The audio circuits are supplied with ±60 volts DC. This is twice the voltage used for discrete operational amplifiers and four times the voltage used for common IC-based semiconductor operational amplifiers. Due to the high operating voltage of 120 volts, VOLTAiR technology achieves exceptional technical specifications in dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio and headroom.”

“The highly acclaimed AKM AK4490 Velvet Sound premium DAC chip is used as the converter chip in the digital-to-analog converter. It converts PCM audio with a resolution of 32 bits and a sampling rate of up to 768 kilohertz.”

“The Diamond features a dual low-pass filter, the DLP120. One filter is responsible for PCM and the other for DSD audio signals, since different roll-off frequencies are required. Of course, the SPL VOLTAiR technology is used here as well, which brings a plus in dynamics, headroom and sound.”

Sound:

“The strumming of the acoustic guitar was clearly accentuated, the music was free floating in the room, so to speak, a wonderful listening experience.”

“The Diamond’s very balanced, well-rounded sound is remarkable, as the music comes along very rhythmically, which makes you want to move your feed to the music.”

Conclusion:

“Richness of sound, flawless performance and dynamics are also included – together with a features set that should leave hardly any wishes unfulfilled: an almost irresistible offer.”

In reviewing the elector preamp with S800 stereo amp and m1000 mono amps Terry London said:
"All three SPL pieces offer three very apparent characteristics that lead to an overall beautiful/relaxing musical experience for the listener.
An overall silky-smooth presentation that rivals the grainlessness of the best tube-based gear. A top to bottom balance where all frequencies are woven together in a natural, seamless manner. They also offer great overall macro-dynamics that give the music the drive and pop to get your foot tapping to the music's beat."

2024 amplifier of the year from Part Time Audiophile

The S1200 is a 300 watts per channel stereo power amp that is a stereo version of the M1000 mono amps with lower, but still high power power. It does 520 watts at 4 ohms and 550 watts at 2 ohms. Picture a larger S800 with similar conics but almost double the power. It is available in silver, black or red and comes with center inserts in all 3 colors. Shown above in silver with black insert. It uses the SPL exclusive Voltair ultra high current technology for wider dynamics and low noise levels. It is a fully balanced design with XLR as well as RCA inputs.

The Performer s1200 has a protection circuit against DC voltage and against overheating. If direct current (DC) is detected, the output stage switches off automatically and the Protect LED lights up red. To protect the s1200 against the unlikely event of overheating, a temperature sensor at the heatsinks continously monitors the temperature of the device. The TEMP LED lights up yellow when the Performer s1200 is getting too hot. As a result of this the output stage is switched off and the fans run on high-speed until the device has cooled down.

Our Price $3,699.00

The Director MK2 is a state of the art preamplifier with exceptional internal DAC

In the future audiophile review they sum with:

"SPL isn’t an audiophile household name but it could be and likely will be soon. If you are anywhere near in the market for a DAC/preamp at these prices – you would be well suited to order up a version that best meets your needs. This is like sharing a newly opened restaurant with your foodie friends. You know that in a few weeks when the word gets out that there will be a line around the block. The SPL Director MK2 DAC/preamp is an audiophile component that delivers more performance and design that I ever thought was possible in a $4,100 stereo preamp at this stage. I am likely going to order a preamp-only unit for my reference system in the coming week while sending this component to some of my colleagues (assuming SPL allows it) so that they can experience the hype and excitement."

Read the entire review here: https://futureaudiophile.com/spl-director-mk2-dac-preamp-reviewed/

The Director Mk2 is the derivative of the reference preamplifier Director. The all new high voltage digital to analog converter now supports 32 bit and sample rates up to 768kHz as well as DSD256. Besides the four digital inputs there is a total of six analog inputs – two of which are balanced with XLR connectors. Fans of analog tape machines or external audio processing can insert their beloved gear in the Tape Monitor loop. VOLTAiR technology is the unique SPL 120V Rail Technology within the Professional Fidelity series. This makes the Director Mk2 an outstandig device in terms of dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio and headroom delivering an exceptional sound experience with tube-like smoothness, serenity, transparency and realness.

"Frankly, the sound of the SPL even startled me. Because it replaced the ... preamplifier and my... Directstream DAC... and I liked it better at first sight than this almost ten-thousand-euro duo. The Director Mk2 impressed from the first bar."
